Location: Orlando, FL - Specialty: Surgery, Thoracic
Florida Hospital is looking for a Thoracic Surgery leader with a strong background and experience in lung and esophageal oncological surgery. This new leader would work in conjunction with our Florida Hospital Cancer Institute and our Florida Hospital Cardiovascular and Transplant Institutes. Clinical focus would involve thoracic oncology surgery as well as benign thoracic conditions such as esophageal disorders, lung parenchymal diseases (LVRS and diagnostic procedures), airway disorders, pleural diseases and thoracic outlet conditions. Integration with a robust and growing lung transplant program is important while direct involvement would be dependent on the interest and background of the candidate.
The Florida Hospital Cancer Institute is the largest cancer program in the state of Florida with 8 hospitals in Central Florida seeing over 750 thoracic cancer cases each year. We have a comprehensive multidisciplinary thoracic oncology program led by national experts Dr. Tarek Mekhail and Dr. Mark Socinski. https://www.floridahospitalcancer.com/cancer-programs/lung-cancer-esophageal-cancer
We are establishing an Advanced Lung Disease Institute and developing our medical team with physicians clinically focused on areas of expertise in ILD, lung transplant, COPD, CF, PH and CTEPH.
We are also making major investments in our lung and heart failure programs, with 20 lung transplants completed in 2017, along with the highest lung transplant rates and the shortest wait times in the country. We also performed 60 heart transplants and 60 VAD’s in 2017 with over 100 ECMO deployments.
Given the growth in population in Central Florida, the opportunity to be differentiated in the region with respect to quality and scope, an exceptional Thoracic Surgical Program should be capable of performing greater than 2500 cases annually.
This position is employed through our Florida Hospital and would work in association with our team of cardiothoracic surgeons.
Overall dedicated time to the administrative portion of this role will fall between 20-40% depending on the needs of the program.

- Board certification through ABTS.
- Ideal candidate would have at least five years of experience post fellowship and demonstrated experience in a leadership role within thoracic surgery and ideally a multidisciplinary setting.
- Demonstrated excellence in clinical outcomes.
The ability to build and shape a program, develop and work within a multi-disciplinary team, a competitive salary and benefits structure, the chance to maintain an academic standing through research and teaching, and living in beautiful, sunny Orlando are just some of the attractive aspects of this opportunity.
