Location: Orlando, FL - Specialty: Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care

Florida Hospital is establishing an Advanced Lung Disease Institute and is looking for a dynamic and experienced leader to help develop our subspecialty programs.   The new medical director would have the ability to focus clinically on his/her area of expertise (ILD, lung transplant, COPD, CF, PH or CTEPH) while shaping various facets of the program.

Responsibilities would include the following: leading the clinical quality for ALD care including quality metrics and quality assurance teams; active participation in regional, national, and international ALD meetings and conferences; education of residents and staff; community outreach; and program development.  The medical director would also be involved with building a core team of physicians working to improve the breadth and intensity of ALD services within our system of nine Central Florida hospital locations and eventually within our statewide hospitals.  Long term, we are also looking for leadership development for fellowship programs in Pulmonary and ALD.

We are making major investments in our lung and heart failure programs, with 20 lung transplants completed in 2017, along with the highest thoracic transplant rates and the shortest wait times in the country.  We also performed 60 heart transplants and 60 VAD’s in 2017 with over 100 ECMO deployments.  Our program goals are to reach 80-100 lung transplants per year and approximately 200+ durable heart replacements.   We also have an active CTEPH program and pulmonary thrombo endartectomy program with approximately 20 performed in 2017.

Overall dedicated time to the administrative portion of this role will fall between 20-40% depending on the needs of the program.

Requirements for ALD Medical Director:

  • Fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
  • Board certification through ABMS or AOA in Pulmonology
  • Ideal candidate would have at least five years of experience post fellowship and demonstrated experience in a leadership role within an associated ALD program
  • Demonstrated excellence in clinical research

The ability to build and shape a program, develop and work within a multi-disciplinary team, a competitive salary and benefits structure, the chance to maintain an academic standing through research and teaching, and living in beautiful, sunny Orlando are just some of the attractive aspects of this opportunity.

Location: Orlando, FL - Specialty: Pulmonary Disease, Transplant

The Florida Hospital Transplant Institute is seeking a dynamic, fellowship-trained transplant pulmonologist to join our lung program on the thoracic transplant team.   The new physician would help continue to develop our CMS approved transplant program with full hospital support.   Physician would have the benefit of cross coverage for transplant call and work with a comprehensive team including surgeons, coordinators, dieticians, pharmacists, therapists and social workers.

Requirements of the position include:

  • Board Certification is required in Pulmonology and Critical Care.
  • Previous lung transplant experience at a UNOS certified program
  • UNOS eligibility or certification.

As a team member of the Lung Transplant Program, this physician would have the opportunity to continue to help build a nationally leading program along with our two cardiothoracic transplant surgeons.  Florida Hospital has already completed 65 lung transplants since October 2015, including 20 in 2017.  Volumes are expected to continue to increase substantially over the next several years.  We are the only lung transplant program in our designated service area. Our median wait time for transplant is four days.  We have a 98% 1-year survival rate despite taking on extremely complex cases. Our average Lung Allocation Score (LAS) was 51, of which, 14% of these cases were done off ECMO. In addition to the expertise of our donor management team, we have built a strong relationship with our surrounding OPOs and donor hospitals resulting in a median waitlist time of 6.15 days in 2017. Our transplant rate is the highest in the country.  Because of our access to donor lungs and the needs for lung transplantation, we believe that we will transplant between 60 and 150 lung transplants per year.  The range is based on building the appropriately sized team to manage these volumes.

A full commitment from hospital administration along with a large referral network and a local OPO makes this a very intriguing and appealing opportunity for a physician with a passion in lung transplant.
